Photovoltaics

Energy carriers of the future

Photovoltaics, or PV for short, is an aspect of solar technology and describes the conversion of the sun’s light into electricity. This process requires panels comprising solar cells made of silicon. In addition, a photovoltaic system also requires batteries to store the electricity they produce.

Solar modules only produce DC (direct current), and AC (alternating current) is required for use in the home or for feeding it into the National Grid. A so-called inverter is installed to convert the current.

Such systems are expensive to produce but they have quite a few advantages and are even financially subsidised.

Photovoltaics – benefits and subsidies

  • In contrast to fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, there is an unlimited supply of sunlight
  • Sunlight is also free!
  • By operating a PV system, you can become independent from constantly increasing energy costs
  • Solar power is emission-free, which protects the environment
  • A PV system has a long life cycle and there are various subsidies that make installation worthwhile in the long term.
